Registration & Support

Disabled Student

Advice and support is available for students who have:

  • Sensory impairments
  • Long standing medical condition(s)
  • Recently been diagnosed with a medical condition
  • Mobility difficulties and/or wheelchair users
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Specific Learning Difficulties/Dyslexia
  • Mental Health issues (note that disability support is provided for students with Mental Health issues by the Mental Health Practitioners (MHP) within the Counselling and Mental Health Support Team)

Registration with the Disability Support Team

In order to register with the Disability Support Team you must make an appointment to see a Disabilities Adviser, or MHP as appropriate, at either City or Coach Lane Campus.  Please bring appropriate evidence of your disability, medical condition or Mental Health issues to the appointment.

The University requires all medical evidence to be current; it must be typed on headed paper and signed.

Students with a Specific Learning Difficulty, such as Dyslexia, should provide a valid report.  This could be written by a Psychologist or Specialist Teacher with appropriate qualifications.  This report should be an assessment carried out after your 16th birthday as it can also be used to support an application for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA).

Support Available

The type of support varies depending on your needs.  All students who indicate that they have a disability at application stage will be contacted by the Disability Support Team and offered an appointment to discuss their needs with a Disabilities Adviser/MHP.  Students are encouraged to do this as soon as possible as it may take some time to put adequate support in place.

Examples of support could include:

  • Formally notifying your tutors of your disability or medical condition and recommending appropriate support strategies with regard Learning, Teaching and Assessment to your tutors via a formal Disabled Sttudents Support Recommendations report which will be agreed with you
  • Making alternative examination arrangements
  • Arranging non-medical help, such as a note taker, scribe, reader and Dyslexia Support Tutorials
  • Assisting you with an application for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA)
  • Advising on adapted and accessible accommodation
  • Providing short term loans of IT equipment
