Sensory Impairments
Advice and support is available to students who are:
- Blind
- Partially sighted
- D/deaf
- Hard of hearing
The type of support available varies depending on your needs. If you would like to discuss your situation further, please make an appointment with a Disabilities Adviser.
Support for Blind and Partially Sighted Students
All students who indicate that they are blind or partially sighted at application stage will be contacted by the Disability Support Team and offered an appointment to discuss their needs with a Disabilities Adviser. Students are encouraged to do this as soon as possible as it may take some time to put adequate support in place.
Students can also contact the Disability Support Team at any time during
their course if they feel they need support or information due to their
disability.
Some of the support available to blind or partially sighted students is as
follows:
- Advice on Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA), and support in applying for this.
- The use of local Transcription Services for the Brailling of large documents or to put information onto alternative formats.
- Information and advice about services in the University and local community.
- Advice on the use of the Support Worker Service or alternative.
- Ongoing individual support.
- Support and guidance for study related issues.
- Support and advice for academic and support staff.
- The use of an on-campus Braille embosser.
- Recommending appropriate support strategies with regard to Learning, Teaching and Assessment to your tutors via a Disabled Students Support Recommendations report agreed with you.
Support for D/deaf Students
All students who indicate that they are D/deaf or have a hearing loss at application stage will be contacted by a member of the Disability Support Team and offered an appointment to discuss their needs. Students are encouraged to do this as soon as possible as it may take some time to put adequate support in place.
Students can also contact the Disability Support Team at any time during
their course if they feel they need support or information relating to
their deafness.
