NHS Students

Financial support for 2011/12

If your programme is a pre-registration course funded by the NHS you can apply for the NHS Bursary. This normally means that your tuition fees will be paid for you by the NHS and you could also receive money to help with your living costs. The type and amount bursary you receive depends on the programme that you study.

In addition to the bursary, depending on your personal circumstances, you may also be eligible for additional allowances. These include a Dependant’s Allowance, Childcare Allowance, Parent's Learning Allowance, Disabled Student’s Allowance and the Initial Expenses Allowance.

NHS degree students can also usually apply for a reduced Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England.

Help is also available with travel expenses while you are on clinical placement.  Providing the cost of your journey between your term time address and placement is more than your normal daily travel costs to the University, you will be able to claim back the cost of that travel.

For more detailed information on what support available for your course and how to apply, use the links on the left of this page.

If you need further information or advice on your financial support from the NHS or Student Finance England you can speak to an Advisor in the Welfare & International Support team at the Student Support and Wellbeing Service. You can also visit the NHS Student Bursaries website or contact the NHS Student Bursaries Unit on 0845 358 6655.
