PGCE students

Tuition Fees

PGCE Students are liable to pay the full tuition fee. In 2011/12 the tuition fee will be £3,375 however students can opt to take out a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England* to cover the cost of their tuition fees. This loan is not repayable until after you complete your studies and you are earning over £15,000 per year.  

Maintenance Loan

Full-time PGCE students may also be able to apply for a Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England to help with living costs.  The first £2,763 of the loan is not income assessed.   You could get up to £3,838 if you live at home or £4,950 if you live away from home.

Maintenance Grant/Special Support Grant

For the academic year 2011/12 eligible PGCE students will receive a non repayable Maintenance Grant/Special Support Grant of up to £2,906.

Students with household incomes of £25,000 or below will receive the full grant of £2,906.  Those with incomes between £25,000 and £34,000 will receive part of the means tested element of the grant (on a sliding scale).  Any student with a household income of £34,000 or above will receive only the £1,106 non-income assessed part of the grant.

TDA Bursaries

The Teaching Development Agency is currently offering tax-free training bursaries to students studying an eligible PGCE in seven subject areas.  To find out if you qualify for a training busary follow the link: TDA Website


Flexible PGCE students

Students studying on flexible PGCE programme in 2011/12 will be charged a tuition fee of £3,375.

The Flexible PGCE allows you to take up to two years to complete the programme. The programme is designed to be flexible in terms of timing and delivery.  If you are going to study the flexible PGCE you will be treated as a part time student for the financial support purposes. However, the amount you are eligible to receive will depend on the number of weeks you are in attendance and your household income. 

Fee Grant & Course Grant

Student Finance England will work out your entitlement to financial support on a pro rata basis. As a part time student, you can apply for a Fee Grant to help towards the cost of your tuition fees and a Course Grant  to help with costs whilst on your course (the same financial support that applies to part time undergraduates). Students starting a course in 2012/13

Tuition fees will change for courses starting in 2012/13.   The tuition fees and funding for PGCE programmes in 2012/13 ar not yet known.  We ill update our web pages once the Government have announced its plans for the funding of Initial Teacher Education programmes.
