Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Issues

Life in Newcastle

Newcastle has a thriving and growing gay scene, mostly based in the area around the Centre for Life, and there are also lots of other ‘gay friendly’ social and cultural venues. There are a number of local services, as you’ll see below, which offer support, advice and information on LGBT issues, and the size of the city means you’ll soon get to know people.

If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, you may face the same sorts of issues as a student as you do in wider society; homophobic bullying, heterosexism, social isolation, or just wondering where it is safe to be ‘out’.

You may be wondering where the local gay scene is, and how to meet other LGBT people.

You may be unsure about your sexual orientation or gender identity, and may feel you need support to explore this.

Please see the contacts and links below for local services and national websites which offer support and information about LGBT issues, including local listings.

If you need support with difficulties you are facing because of your sexual orientation or gender identity, you can also access support from Welfare & International Support,   Counselling & Mental Health Support and the Student Union LGBT Society.
