Enrolment

All students are required to formally enrol as students of the University before commencing their studies and each subsequent year after that.

Please note that regardless of the date on your loan/grant Payment Schedule, the first instalment of your student loan/grant will not be paid into your bank account until the University has confirmed with the Student Loan Company (SLC)/ Student Finance England that you have formally enrolled onto your programme of study and are in attendance (at the start of term this process can take a day or two as your details need to be entered onto the Student Records System). Once the SLC have received confirmation from the University, money will be released into your account; this will take a further 72 hours.

New students

During the summer, detailed Induction and Enrolment Guides will be forwarded to everyone holding an unconditional offer You will sent instructions on how to enrol on line and to upload a photograph so that your University Smartcard can be produced before you arrive. In addition, you will be sent your computer user name and password which allows you access to the on line enrolment system. If you are holding a conditional offer, you will be sent this information as soon as you successfully fulfil the terms of your offer. You must attend a University enrolment session, and enrol at the time and place indicated to be formally registered on your chosen programme.

At your enrolment session you will be given your University Smartcard (if you have uploaded a photograph in advance). This will be your evidence that you are a student and entitle you to borrow books from the library and use the facilities of the University etc. You will also need to bring your Smartcard as proof of identity when you sit examinations. You will be expected to keep your ID card for the duration of your degree programme. You will, however, be required to confirm your details on an annual basis.

Please ensure that when you come to enrol you have the following:

  • Your Student Finance Breakdown and Payment Timetable from Student Finance England showing whether you are paying your tuition fees with the Tuition Fee Loan, OR
  • A letter from your employer or sponsor confirming that they will be paying your fees, OR
  • Credit/debit card details or bank account details for a direct debit mandate, OR
  • A cheque to cover payment of your fees in full.

You may also be required to provide other documents, such as your birth certificate or passport, evidence of entry qualifications and passport photographs. Specific details on what you will need to bring to enrolment will be provided by the School in which your course is based.

Returning students

Continuing students must re-enrol at the beginning of each academic year to confirm their details as well as their intention to return.

Returning students will also have the option to re-enrol online through the e-learning portal. If, after your resits, you are waiting for confirmation that you can progress then you will not be able to re-enrol, but for most students the process will be straightforward. On screen guidance will be available. Enrolment will be confirmed through your Northumbria mailbox, so it is essential to clear out your mailbox before your return to university in order to receive your confirmation. More information about re-enrolling online will be sent out to returning students towards the end of the academic year.

Failure to re-enrol could result in delays to your access to University IT systems and for home students who get a Student Loan/Maintenance Grant, delays to your payments.

Please note that students who have outstanding debts to the University may not be able to enrol until they have agreed to repayment with the Finance Office.

Your loan/grant payment is activated by the University advising the SLC when you return at the start of the new academic year. It can take up to 72 hours to release payment into your account.
