Smoking
Smoking in the UK
A growing majority of people in the UK are now non-smokers, with just over
a quarter of adults smoking compared with almost twice that figure in 1974.
Although more and more people are giving up, this decline is concentrated
in the older age groups. Almost as many young people have taken up, with
80% of smokers commencing the habit in their teens.
Most people are aware of the serious health risks associated with smoking
and there is now considerable evidence to support this.
At Northumbria, we believe that staff, students and visitors who need to
access University premises, have the right to breathe smoke free air.
Consequently the University has a No Smoking Policy which
applies throughout all University Buildings including Halls of Residence.
This policy reflects the national no smoking policy.
UK smoking ban
From 1 July 2007 , all workplaces and substantially enclosed public areas in England became smoke-free by law. This includes offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, membership clubs, public transport and work vehicles that are used by more than one person. The law will also mean that indoor workplace smoking rooms will disappear. So anyone wishing to smoke will have to go outside instead.
Northumbria's Policy
Northumbria's No Smoking Policy prohibits smoking in all University
buildings.

Five ways to give up smoking:
- Nicotine replacement therapy: available in patches, gum, nasal spray, inhaler, microtab or lozenge
- Acupuncture: involves fine needles being inserted into key pressure points on various parts of the body
- Hypnotherapy: however, there is no proven effectiveness by clinical tests
- Seeking specialist help
- Cold turkey - this means giving up through willpower alone
