Store Cards

(see also: Credit Cards)

Store cards can be a convenient way to pay, but they are generally recognised as one of the most expensive ways to borrow. Using store cards can lead to debt due to the high interest rates they often charge. It is important to be aware of all the facts before you commit yourself. Read the promotional leaflets (including the small print) preferably in the comfort of your own home - away from the sales team! When you are satisfied that you understand the terms and conditions, then the final decision is yours.

Dos & Don’ts of using store cards:

  • Always keep your card safe.
  • Always report it to the store if it goes missing.
  • Always dispose of account documents carefully (and any other documents containing your personal details). Buy a shredder for this purpose if possible.
  • Always destroy old cards.
  • Never lend your card to anyone else.
  • Never leave your account unsettled at the end of the month - you will accrue more interest and further debt.
