What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about typical management practice and activity necessary at the early stages of construction projects. There is a strong emphasis on the key pre-construction aspects of such projects in this module. Themes can include: the planning for, and management of, construction project-level organisations and resources; the use of construction production information, the management of design during the construction process, the role that Digital Construction solutions including Building Information Modelling (BIM) have in this process; construction project planning processes; and the production of construction solutions for specific project challenges.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a combination of lectures, technologically- enhanced learning (TEL), and group seminars. Your learning will also be facilitated through a combination of tutor guided independent learning (TGIL) activities (e.g., directed reading), and student identified independent learning activities. The use of past or available real-life construction case studies may also be used to enhance learning activities. Lectures and seminars will be used to support effective transmission of information and may be delivered via a combination of face-to-face ‘live’ sessions or the use of digitally pre-recorded sessions or live video webcasts. All ‘live’ teaching lecture sessions will be captured and made available to you from the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP).
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Support will include academic staff feedback during seminars and following formative assessment tasks. Academic staff will place announcements on the eLP that will direct you to suitable activities that will enhance your understanding, knowledge and intellectual development through a combination of research-rich, and technologically-enhanced learning opportunities

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Understand key processes involved in construction operations and analyse challenges affecting their performance.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of Building Information Modelling as a process, which can improve the delivery of construction projects.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Develop proposals for efficient temporary facilities in order to undertake effective construction operations.
4. Produce effective planning solutions to the challenges of construction projects, considering issues such as, sequence, methodology and strategy.

5. Apply disciplinary knowledge to complex problems of practice and identify appropriate solutions.
How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment designed using principles of authentic, and problem-based learning will be used to allow you to build confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical and professional concepts presented in the module. Additional formative feedback shall be delivered to you verbally by academic staff during formally-scheduled teaching and individual or group activity-based sessions to help you learn and prepare you for the submission of your summative assessment.
Summative Assessment
Summative assessment will be by two pieces of assessment, presentation and coursework that together will assess your ability to satisfy all the module learning outcomes. Their design will employ the principles of authentic, and problem-based learning. You will use the University’s VLE to submit your coursework digitally and will receive your feedback using appropriate digital feedback tools.

Module abstract
This module focuses on pre-construction aspects of construction projects. Key content in ‘Construction Project Management and BIM 1’ includes the planning of work before execution, and considers how such plans are formulated and communicated to stakeholders. Management of construction projects is explored using traditional and contemporary methods. The potential applications and benefits of technology and working practices such as Building Information Modelling are evaluated. This learning will equip you with knowledge and skills that are highly valued by employers which will help deliver effective construction projects in future practice. The module has been designed to satisfy several of the programme learning outcomes related to technical knowledge, employability, commercial practice, critical thinking, and innovation.
