University Secretary

Philip Booth

Mr Philip Booth

Philip Booth is Secretary and adviser to the Board of Governors and its committees. As University Secretary he is responsible for supporting the effective governance of the University and for its legal and regulatory affairs. The conduct of the University’s appeals and complaints processes, records management, data protection and freedom of information also fall within his remit.

After studying Law at the University of Southampton, Philip qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and worked in private practice for a couple of years for a large national commercial law firm. This was followed by a period of four years lecturing at Nottingham Trent University on the solicitors’ professional course. In 1998 Philip joined Northumbria University as in-house legal adviser, and eight years later he took on the additional role as Deputy University Secretary.

In 2011 Philip was appointed University Secretary after a period of acting in this role following the retirement of the former University Secretary.  He reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor and to the Chair of the Board of Governors.
