Solicitor Apprenticeship Recruitment Event

The trailblazing North East Solicitor Apprenticeship (NESA) programme, which has so far offered opportunities to 13 solicitor apprentices at five regional law firms and in one in-house legal team, is now preparing to launch for a second year. This year, the programme is working with Northumbria University who will provide the academic delivery to the apprentices commencing in September 2018*.

The NESA initiative last year saw Muckle LLP, McDaniel & Co, Sintons LLP, QualitySolicitors Smith Roddam, Womble Bond Dickinson and North Tyneside Council work together to create a new six-year legal apprenticeship leading to full qualification as a Solicitor.

The programme has won widespread praise for its innovative approach in opening up the legal profession to young people and offering an alternative route into law.

The 13 apprentices, who joined their new firms in September, are excelling in their roles and are combining their legal work and training with their studies, while also earning a salary. Apprentices do not pay any university tuition fees and will graduate with a Northumbria University degree. In order to complete the programme they will have to demonstrate that they have obtained the relevant skills and knowledge required during their workplace training. They will also have to take a two stage centralised assessment, the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

This year, as Northumbria University will support NESA, the new intake of Solicitor apprentices will be able to complete the academic part of their apprenticeship close to home in Newcastle.
