Designed for those who wish to gain a postgraduate degree whilst balancing your already demanding role and other commitments, this programme develops knowledge, skills and competence in the areas of personal development, leadership, management and strategy and is perfectly aligned to existing Command Leadership Training or similar.

Furthermore, you will work on developing research skills, critical thinking and effective organisational improvement techniques as well as exploring all the personal competences associated with leadership and management in complex, dynamic and excellence focused organisations.

But it's not just about cutting edge theory; it's also about hands-on practical experience. To this end, you are encouraged to build on your own leadership and management experience with work related assignments which will contribute to self, career and workplace improvement.

The Masters in Leadership and Management is an innovative postgraduate work based degree programme delivered over two and a half years which provides an excellent learning platform for aspiring or existing leaders and managers.

Management Investigation

To support you in your studies, the programme uses a combination of teaching and learning approaches, including:

  • Twelve two day workshops delivered on Friday and Saturdays for those wishing to study on a part time basis
  • Fully distance learning with weekly podcast and video cast for those who cannot attend sessions.
  • Optional workshops and tutorials for each module delivered by highly qualified teaching professionals with real world experience.
  • An online study portal which provides access to a range of e-books, over 300 electronic databases and 30,000 electronic journals.
  • A reading pack for each module.
  • Materials delivered weekly online for all learners, with video and podcast designed to allow you to study at a pace which suits your lifestyle.
  • Study materials, providing knowledge and understanding, which also helps you apply your ideas to the workplace.
  • Work related assessments that give you an opportunity to develop and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Induction and Academic Skills Development

An online or face to face introductory session will be delivered at the beginning of the programme. This is an opportunity for you to clearly understand what the programme is designed to do, how it will work, meet the team, learn more about the modules and assessments and gain a detailed introduction to the learning resources and support available. We will also spend time developing your academic skills such as report writing, referencing, making best use of academic learning materials and critical review. The session also provides an opportunity for questions to be asked, clarification sought and to issue reading and pre-work for Module One. You will also be able to meet and get to know fellow learners.

Leader Identity and Leadership

This twelve week module considers the traits and characteristics of an effective strategic leader. Specifically you will consider your leader identity; exploring your values, motives and goals for becoming a leader. Through a range of tools and diagnostic techniques you will develop intra and interpersonal awareness through critical reflection and will evaluate your existing or potential leadership style in terms of impact on others and the organizational context. Assessment is by means of a self analysis and personal development plan.

Leading for Organisational Performance

This twelve week module considers the role of the leader in the strategic development of forward thinking organisations. Specifically you will develop skills and knowledge of effective strategic leadership. Assessment is by means of a 5000 word work based improvement report.

Creating the Dynamic Organisation

This twelve week module considers contemporary approaches in the management and development of organisations. Specifically you will develop an applied understanding of contemporary management practices including organisational transformation, innovation, knowledge creation and learning, social networks, high performing workplaces, team dynamics and forward thinking cultures. Assessment is by means of a 5000 word work based improvement report.

Strategic Focus

This twelve week module is designed to develop your ability to apply and evaluate concepts and techniques related to organisational strategy, improvement and the leadership of change. With an aim of ensuring you make an effective contribution to your line of business, you will be introduced to a managerial view of strategic processes including how to identify, optimise and add value to the organisation, optimising your business model, creating and sustaining value and strategic advantage, optimising organisational growth, controlling the organisation and management of politics, strategic communication, governance and decision making. The module will be assessed by means of a 5000 word of a work based project reflecting on opportunities for strategic improvement within your line of business.

Management Investigation

This is a six month service improvement project that allows you to complete a work based management investigation report of your choice which aims to use and extend the knowledge and skills that have been acquired during the programme.

Working alongside a named tutor this project will require you to investigate an area of your workplace activity to identify areas of improvement, using literature and best practice to justify decisions.

Entry Requirements

If you are interested in joining the programme you should be employed and meet one of the following criteria:

  • An honours or CNAA degree
  • A recognised level five Diploma in leadership or management
  • An equivalent professional qualification
  • Over 3 years appropriate work experience


For those who already hold an existing level seven award in Leadership or Management, exemptions of up to 60 credits may be available.
