There are a number of ways to get into teaching. In addition to our campus based programmes, Northumbria University Newcastle also offers more school centred options such as School Direct.

PGCE School Direct Overview

PGCE School Direct at Northumbria University Newcastle is an exciting opportunity to teacher train in outstanding schools alongside highly experienced teacher mentors. Your School Based Training Plan is designed by the lead school and tailored to your skills and expertise. Over the course of your training, you will gain experience in more than one school and teach across different year groups within your training age phase.

Applicants are welcomed for Early Years, Primary, Secondary Subjects and Special School places that our partner schools have been allocated.

School Direct Training Schools

School Direct Training Schools choose the university they want to work with – Northumbria University is a centre of excellence for initial teacher education, and the team at Northumbria are delighted to be the biggest university partner, chosen by partnership schools, in the North East.

Your University-based training involves a total of 15 days on campus where you will explore contemporary issues related to education and gain a deeper appreciation of how research and theory inform practice. You will have the support of academic tutors who will support you as you reflect on your school experience and work towards achieving a Postgraduate certificate in Education (60 credits at Masters level).
