Preparing The Global Health Workforce: Online survey information

You are being asked for your permission to take part in a research project. Before you make a decision it is important for you to read this information so you understand why the research is being carried out and what it will involve. Reading this information, discussing it with others and asking the researchers any questions you might have will help you decide whether or not you would like to take part.

What is the purpose of the evaluation?

This research is finding out about alumni views and experiences of participating on a postgraduate programme at Northumbria University. Researchers will be asking graduates of the Master of Public Health, MSc Health Sciences (Management) and MSc Physiotherapy Studies programmes about their perceptions of their learning transition from undergraduate education in their country of origin into postgraduate Higher Education in the UK.

The research will help us to understand how international postgraduate students perceive the influence of their postgraduate health programme on their career, or potential career, in the global healthcare system and what factors influence/ influenced  the learning experience of international students over the course of their study on a full-time taught postgraduate health-related programme. This will help to make the programmes the best they can be.

Why am I being asked?

Because you graduated from one of the following programmes: Master of Public Health; MSc Health Sciences (Management); MSc Physiotherapy Studies between September 2011 and September 2014 for whom we have contact details.

This information sheet will help you make that decision. If you do decide to take part, remember that you can stop being involved in the research whenever you choose, without telling the researchers why. Deciding not to take part, or requesting to leave the research at any point, will not affect you in any way.

What will happen if I agree to take part?

If you agree to take part in the research you will be asked to complete a short online questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a number of questions relating to your experience as an international postgraduate student on one of the above programmes and how you feel your postgraduate course has influenced your career. The email inviting you to participate in this research contains a secure web link to the questionnaire that has been developed. The questionnaire should take no more than 30 minutes to complete.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

By completing the online survey you will help us to understand what factors influenced the learning experience of international students over the course of their study on a full-time taught postgraduate health-related programme.

Will the fact that I have taken part in this research be kept confidential?

Yes, your name will not be written in any reports or documents resulting from this research.

What will happen to the results of the research?

A report will be produced for the School; this will present the anonymous views of participants. The results will also be shared with academics in other Universities through conference presentations and publications in professional journals. The findings will be available to graduands who took part in research if requested.

Who is organising and funding the research?

The research is not being funded and is being carried out by the Programme Leader and a member of academic staff involved in teaching on these postgraduate programmes.

Who has reviewed the research?

Before this research could begin permission was obtained from the Ethics Committee at Northumbria University. The Committee reviewed the way the research was planned to safeguard your interests.

What do I do now?

If you are interested in taking part please use the secure web link in the email you received or click here to complete the questionnaire.
