BA Business With Marketing Helen BoydWhat are you doing now?

I’m currently working for national furniture retailer ScS as Senior Marketing Executive. I’m involved in all of the advertising for the brand including TV, Press and Radio among many other diverse and exciting projects.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

I chose to study BA HONS Business with Marketing at Northumbria due to the positive reputation and great facilities of the Business School. The variety of modules which the course offered also appealed to me.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

My course involved me attending a mix of lectures and seminars as well as team projects. The seminars that followed the lectures allowed us to develop further understanding of what we had heard in the lecture prior. We were then often given an individual or team task to follow up on what we had learnt and then constructive feedback was given to ensure we were on the right path.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

They were all very knowledgeable in their individual fields, with the majority of them having real life hands on experience which made lectures and seminars more interesting.

How connected was your course with industry?

As part of my course, in my third year I was encouraged to take a one year industry based placement. This allowed me to put into practice what I had learnt from my first two years, and then take the experience I gained during my placement year into my final year with me. This placement was invaluable and it definitely helped me get my first role in industry as I was able to boast academic qualifications alongside workplace experience.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

Studying at Northumbria helped me to achieve a 2:1 BA HONS degree in Business with Marketing whilst also gaining a year’s work experience in the Marketing industry. I believe having both the academic achievement as well as related work experience, gave me a competitive advantage over other job candidates helping me to achieve my career goals.

What was the best thing about your course?

The Business with Marketing course allowed me to gain an in depth insight into the world of Marketing whilst also developing my knowledge of many other areas of Business. This meant I had flexibility in my chosen career direction if later I decided marketing wasn’t for me.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Seeing a task right through to the end, from the initial investigation and researching to the implementation of the project. Attention to detail has also been key in my current role.
