Career Path: Staff Nurse, Northumbria Healthcare
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Steven BinksIn my role I make a difference to patients at vulnerable times, especially those with learning difficulties. I have  worked previously supporting adults with learning difficulties and realised how little care they can receive.

What are you doing now?

I currently work full time as a staff nurse in an acute environment

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The strong connections with local healthcare trusts

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Variety of professionals from physiotherapy, occupational therapists and medical students. My only fault was the location of the campus (coach lane) is far away from the city itself

How connected was your course with industry?

My course was 50/50 University to placement time.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

Personally, placement was the most significant aspect for this career path and being a hands on learner

What was the best thing about your course?

Providing skills required and understanding to work effectively as a nurse

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

I provided links with other healthcare services and provided extra curricular experiences

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Overall the clinical skills are what have stuck with me and I'd like to see them be incorporated more for future students, making greater use of the clinical skills centre.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Explore the campus and surrounding area, ensure you're aware of what speciality you want to work in as certain trusts may not offer that field

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Essential for work
