Career Path: Project Manager, Turner & Townsend
Location: London, UK

I was born in Ireland and I always had a strong passion for design and construction from a young age. After gaining work experience with a number of architects within the North East of England I soon realised design wasn't for me. I therefore decided to go back to Northumbria during the recession to study for my Masters.

Where are you doing now?

Today I am working on the new Terminal 2 project at Heathrow.  My role allows me to interact with a wide range of professionals and allows me to gain exposure to project management, project controls and delivery assurance.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Northumbria was home to a lot of good lecturers who were passionate about teaching.

What was the best thing about your course?

The lecturers and the relationships developed with them.

Who inspired you the most, and why?

John Weirs and Richard Humphrey were always very supportive.  I learned a lot from both of them through their knowledge and experience gained from working in the construction industry.

Which skills/ knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most throughout your career?

People skills and communication. Both the BSc and MSc course consisted of individuals from all over the world who helped me develop my communication skills and make some good friends and key contacts all over the world.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

The learning side was good, the relationships I had with my lecturers and captaining the men's football team in the BUCS Championship.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Do it and make the most every possibility.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Great learning curve.
