What are you doing now?

Artist, photographer, educator. Still teaching full time.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The course. The staff. The opportunities in Newcastle. The facilities for making art and for research.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Mixture of seminars, whole day sessions, workshops, one to one tutorials and other lectures that were open to all arts students.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

Commitment, approachability, professionalism, academic rigour, wide range of experience, artistic practice, humour and genuineness.

How connected was your course with industry?

MA grounded in working practice. Elements of work fundamental to the action research module.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

Helped me re-establish my arts practice, gave me exhibition opportunities and reinvigorated my teaching practice. Gave me the confidence to go on and work as an artist.

What was the best thing about your course?

The academic challenge, being pushed to make work that mattered and write in a clear and academically thorough way.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

How to create a positive working environment, modelled on the teaching and support I received. The confidence to challenge school based data driven initiatives in favour of child cantered learning.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Mixing with such a great group of people, being challenged to question and delve deep, both personally and professionally. My exhibitions.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Go for it!

Life changing exploration
