Career Path: Technical Officer Environmental Health, Sunderland City Council

What are you doing now?

I am currently working as a Technical Officer at Sunderland City Council. At present I require a qualification in Environmental Health to progress to an Environmental Health Officer and so I am working towards the professional requirements of the qualification now that I have completed the academic aspect.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

It was the closest university that offered the course in the North East.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

A great mixture of teaching methods that kept things interesting, delivered by great staff who were both enthusiastic about there subject and were able to support theory with practical knowledge. The staff were fantastic, helpful and very friendly and made the experience!

How connected was your course with industry?

Two of the modules encouraged the cohort to go in to businesses in order to carry out work such as to audit a Food Safety Management System and to complete a Health & Safety Audit.

What was the best thing about your course?

The staff and course content.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

It has allowed me to work towards gaining the required qualification to gain promotion.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

I enjoyed being in a learning environment that provided a challenge. I am so pleased that I completed my course at Northumbria University and couldn't be more thankful to the module staff who were always there to lend support and experience to point you in the right direction. Their passion for the subject was evident in their teaching and proved to be inspirational throughout.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Go for it!

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Fun yet challenging.
