Dr William Anthony Donkin

Career Path: Lecturer & Researcher, University of Sunderland
Location: Sunderland, UK

I graduated in 1997 with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Management and have since gone on to apply the skills gained from Northumbria at different institutions in the North East and abroad. This has involved organising lectures and workshops on leadership topics and having implemented many practical programmes.

My experience of Sport Management is substantial in that I have been responsible for managing demanding physical training and designing exercise programmes and have worked in two popular Durham schools alongside Physical Education teachers as well as having coached a Super Heavyweight Amateur Boxing Champion.

 I am presently working as a Lecturer at the University of Sunderland where I am also research active.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The University had a great reputation and was local to where I was living at the time.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Studying at Northumbria was great, there was a good mix of coursework and exams.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

Their professionalism and sound knowledge.

How connected was your course with industry?

My placement was linked to the City of Newcastle Outdoor Education Service and I also worked in a number of schools coaching sports.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Studying at the University enabled me to go on and do further study and research.

What was the best thing about your course?

Being a tutor and leader on a number of leadership programmes.

Which skills/ knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most throughout your career?

Teaching and research skills.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria?

The social opportunities that were afforded to me.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about studying at Northumbria?

Go for it - you won't regret it!

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Useful, awakening and thrilling.
