I had always dreamt of being self-employed, and sales and marketing had always interested me. The opportunity to join a super brand like Coca-Cola was too much of a chance to miss so I joined them straight after graduating.

Even though I did not manage to get involved with coming up with Coca Cola’s marketing plans directly, I was carrying out the marketing teams objections by selling in the concepts to the retailers who I looked after. This experience gave me a good overview of what worked at retail and consumer level. The opportunity to become self-employed came around maybe earlier than I thought, but I took the opportunity by initially starting with a retail shop in North Yorkshire. I then set up my internet site a few years later which has grown from strength to strength.

What are you doing now?

I am Managing Director at the Plastic Box Shop.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The location and reputation.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

I found the course very varied and informative. It has stood me in good stead throughout my professional life.

How connected was your course with industry?

We did put some marketing plans together for some local companies which I found very useful.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career the edge?

The course gave me a good overall knowledge of business in general from marketing to accounting which helped to make me a good all-rounder in my business life.

What was the best thing about your course?

The knowledge and support of the staff

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Everything - the city, the course, the people and the lecturers.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Go for it and make the most of the opportunity.
