Mr Lau Chong Huat Anthony


I am an Assistant Conservator within the Heritage Conservation Centre, Singapore. I like the Arts and had great interest in ‘fixing’ damaged stuff. I had previously undertook training and workshops in relation to Conservation and even had a year of Internship with Northumbria University on the, “Conservation of Easel Paintings” course in 2006, under the guidance of Ms Anne Bacon.

what are you doing now?

I am presently a Conservator (Paintings) with the Conservation Department in the Heritage Conservation Centre, Singapore.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your CAREER goals/GIVE YOUR CAREER AN EDGE?

Study at Northumbria prepared and equipped me with the necessary knowledge, exposure and critical thinking needed in the job of a conservator. It also gave me opportunities to learn about other professionals in the field.

What was the best thing about your course?

My course lecturer was very approachable and helpful. This helped me tremendously as I needed to balance my work life and studies. The course content was good.

Who inspired you the most and why?

I would like to thank Ms.Jean Brown. She was very encouraging, helpful, approachable and always there to provide assistance, she pointed out the challenges and made you think critically with regards to comments and feedback.  The other lecturers are great too, and provided me with excellent learning materials online as a distance learning student.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now/throughout your career?

The course materials and assignments are very close and relevant to my work as a Conservator. The Preventive Conservation knowledge and skills I acquired assisted in making me a competent conservator.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria university?

The staff at the university. Also many thanks to the I.T department staff that helped me addressed some of the issues I had with the Blackboard as I was not in UK. That was helpful in getting me to complete my assignments.

WHAT advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at northumbria?

Northumbria University offers a great variety of courses with experienced professionals who offer world class training.  That learning environment helped me to progress as a conservator within museums. 

how would you describe your time at northumbria in 3 words?

Challenging, Intriguing, Awesome!
