Career Path: Immunisation Nurse, NHS
Location: South Tyneside, UK

I have always wanted to work with children but in a caring capacity. I was initially a teacher and the 2-year integrated masters course offered me the opportunity to become a children's nurse, whilst taking in to account my previous experiences and degree.

What are you doing now?Anthony Senior

I work for the community immunisation team which involves vaccinating children in the school setting against flu, HPV and Meningitis, to name a few.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The University has a well established ethos in the north east, particularly in the nursing fields. There are state of the art facilities to assist in the learning experience, both clinical and theoretical.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

The teaching methods are engaging and informative. Seminars and lectures help to build on the rhetoric which can be used in practice. Lecturers are very supportive and experienced in their field.

How connected was your course with industry?

The placements helped apply theory to practice and were relevant to the field of nursing studied and the particular progression point of the programme. Plenty of guest speakers attended seminars, including newly-qualified staff, service users and professionals/experts of the field.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

This was imperative to the programme and helped to gain insight in to the clinical setting. It ultimately led me to my first job within the NHS.

What was the best thing about your course?

The experienced lecturers and mixture of teaching methods and the placements.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

The well-established reputation of the University and the rapport it had with the local hospitals gives students the edge when applying for jobs.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

The theory I have learned has giving me a lifetime of knowledge that I apply in my job on a daily basis.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

The opportunity to feel appreciated and valued as a student.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Don't even think about applying to anywhere else before looking at what Northumbria can offer. Check the course requirements to see if it will meet your aspirations and research the area you wish to study.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Exciting, engaging, fulfilling.
