Muara Sipahutar

I graduated from the best engineering university in Indonesia, the Institut Teknologi Bandung, then took a Masters degree in Business at Northumbria University. Both experiences contributed a lot to my current position and during the first years of my career after graduating from Northumbria University, I worked closely with the big three Indonesian telecommunication companies to launch major mobile marketing projects.

Where are you doing now?

I am currently working as the Digital Marketing Manager Indonesia at Hyatt Hotel
Corporation. I have four years' experience in the Indonesian technology industry and I daily create B2B mutual partnerships and bring good deals to the company. In my previous role I managed a team of several Business Development Officers who handled different divisions of the business.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals / give your career an edge?

Taking a postgraduate degree at Northumbria helped me to know how people study. It also brought a new mindset about how to criticise a theory, develop a hypothesis, and implement and optimise it. This critical thinking helped me a lot in my career, especially in terms of analytical tasks and business development. Additionally, almost all superiors like 'out-of-the-box' or 'without-the-box' thinking with critical analysis from facts or data. Of course, with this great mindset, I was considered a star player in my organisation.

What was the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course was connecting with people from different parts of the world, and seeing things from their point of view.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

If you're taking a postgraduate degree, you only have one or two years. It's short, really. Enjoy! Play hard, study hard! Life will be very different after graduation.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in 3 words?

Best time ever.
