I have recently taken up the role of L&D Manager role for projects at UKAR. My previous role was as a Training Consultant which provided me with a solid platform along which I could progress my learning from Northumbria.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The flexibility - I work full-time and I wanted a distance learning course that was complimentary to my role and aspirations.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

I was offered lectures but decided to study purely at a distance. I was able to attend sessions on-site where I was able to discuss in depth the coursework and course requirements, this was really useful.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

All of the team were very approachable especially when it came to supporting with learning materials. Sometimes studying distance learning can feel quite isolated, but the team were welcoming and consistent by sending weekly and relevant blogs.

How connected was your course with industry?

I had a mixture of lecturers from different backgrounds who were able to bring to life the learning and provide the relevant context.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

Prior to studying at Northumbria I was in a role that I had been in for a number of years and needed something to take my career forward. This course provided me with new skills and fresh approaches to leadership and management that have helped me to secure a more senior role.

What was the best thing about your course?

The flexibility of the approach and the appreciation that this compliments full-time work.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Change management - UKAR was created as a result of change, and understanding these principles have help me understand and appreciate why changes are made.

How would you describe yourself in three words after you graduated at Northumbria?

Focused, driven and successful.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

The flexibility in the approach to study, also the weekly emails helped me understand what needed completing and by when - I was always kept on track!

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

If you are studying distance learning ensure you have the right work-life balance to be able to do it.
