Alexandra Tinning

Career Path: Design Project Manager, Mars Confectionary
Location:

Over the summer of 2011, before graduating from MDI - Alex was chosen as one of 6 UK designers to travel to Sri Lanka to take part in the British Council’s “Ideator - Educational TV programme”. The show follows a very similar format to that of “The Apprentice”, whereby 6 UK design students and 6 Sri Lankan design students go head to head in a multitude challenges using design thinking to solve these complex business problems.

Following on from Ideators - Alex was introduced through the teaching staff of MDI to Sue Wilson, Global Head of Design at Mars Confectionary, and was offered the “Emerging Market Design Manger” role in the Mars Confectionary Global Design Hub in Slough. This role was an enthralling introduction to design in a business setting at the most exciting level. Being able to work on the huge Mars brands (Snickers, M&M’s, Twix, Galaxy) at the fuzzy front end of innovation in diverse markets with a talented, passionate design team and extraordinary skilled network partners.

Following a steep learning curve on designs role in the Mars Confectionary business based out of Slough – Alex seized the opportunity to move to Dubai to be the Design lead for the META region (Middle East Turkey Africa). She is now responsible for providing design management for all Mars Chocolate brands in the region, working towards embedding design within a fast paced priority region. The role demands all of the learning from design study at Northumbria and the practical on the job training from the Mars Design team.

"Before MDI I was blind to the positive difference design can make to business challenges. My year of MDI study enriched my skills and experience far beyond just the curriculum.  The lessons and projects did provide knowledge, tools and techniques of how design innovation can unlock solutions for a infinite number of challenges but it was the links with industry, learning from cross functional peers and collaboration that not only set me up with a job directly after the course but enabled a flying start with an established, talented design management function in Mars Chocolate."
