Samantha Jayne Wright

I have always been passionate about Literature and the written word. From a very early age I knew that I would study English Literature at University. This led me to working hard throughout my GCSEs and opting to study English Literature at A Level.

What are you doing now?

I am currently interning as a Junior Commission Editor at Bettering Education.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals / give your career an edge?

My academic degree has certainly boosted my CV and almost all of the jobs I apply for require a degree in English.

What was the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course was the diversity of what I studied and how the creative aspects differed from the academic writing.

Who inspired you the most, and why?

I was most inspired by Ann-Marie Einhaus. She was my lecturer for one of my modules in third year and also my Dissertation Supervisor. Ann-Marie was unbelievably helpful and supportive during my third year. (I didn't know her before then). She was available whenever I needed her and very approachable. I felt very lucky to have had such a supportive supervisor guiding me through my dissertation. As well as sharing her wealth of knowledge with me, Ann-Marie was always genuinely interested in my life.  Leigh Wetherall-Dickson was close with our seminar group from first year. Although we split off into different groups by third year, Leigh remained in touch with all of us and there was no doubt that she was their to support us all at any time. Leigh knows that I was scared of her in first year. She has a no nonsense approach that I grew to love. Leigh wants the very best for her students and she will do whatever she can to make sure that you perform to the best of your ability.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now/throughout your career?

Writing for different platforms.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

I commuted up to Uni from Hartlepool and I loved the location of the campus. Everything was at hand and although this may sound silly, I loved feeling like I was a University student. Being part of a Creative Writing course meant that I made some great friends and we would often meet to discuss work and give each other feedback.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

 Absolutely go for it. It's a home away from home with staff who genuinely care about their students.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in 3 words?

Inspirational. Friendly. Supportive.
