During his own final year on the same course in 2002, Karl was himself the recipient of an academic award for best overall score in a similar module, and it is this which in part prompted his decision to give something back to Northumbria. Following the success of the first prize, Karl has now made this an annual gift. Karl commented:

"I was delighted to be able to support my University because I appreciate how much my Northumbria education has transformed my life and my opportunities."

The first award of the prize was made in 2012 to Fayaaz Patel, who, after leaving Northumbria, has begun work as graduate cost consultant with EC Harris. Commenting on his award, Fayaaz said:

"It is always nice when hard work is recognised and rewarded in such a way. The prize is a great addition to my academic achievements and will serve me well at the start of my career."
