Sustainable Procurement & Investment

We are proud to be a 'Fairtrade University' and are committed to promoting Fairtrade to students and staff, as outlined in our Fairtrade Policy. We offer a wide range of products in our cafes and shops to help provide decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

Taste Food

We recognise both the positive and negative impacts that food can have on the environment and society and have therefore developed a Sustainable Food Policy. This Policy informs the activity we undertake at the university as well as forming a central part of our relevant tenders.

We work closely with our Catering suppliers, Chartwells, to prioritise animal welfare, people welfare and provenance. These three pillars are supported by nine commitments, including

  • the use of local and seasonal produce
  • commitments to sustainable fishing and animal welfare
  • only using Lion marked British eggs
  • hosting the EATFAIR product range, as endorsed by the Fairtrade Foundation

We aim to use local produce and to support SMEs where possible. This has resulted in some fantastic partnerships including

  • daily supply of bakery goods from a baker 6 miles away
  • use of local Street Food Traders at pop up events
  • purchasing products from student enterprise initiatives i.e. TeaShed tea sold in our retail shop.

We hold the In order to ensure continued improvement, we have committed to achieving the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark by  September 2017 in all of our catering and retail outlets. We are currently undertaking a gap analysis and forming our action plan in our CCE cafe, Foragers café and Claude Gibb Hall.

We have a number of water fountains located around campus and are proud to be part of the national Refill campaign – promoting locations at which you can refill your water bottle for free.  The Life water sold within our outlets is sold in 100% recyclable bottles and funds raised through these sales are used to provide access to safe water in communities around the world.

By including sustainability considerations in our tender processes (such as whole life costing, sourcing local suppliers etc.) we are reducing the negative environmental impact of our operations and supporting the commitments made within our in our Environmental Sustainability Policy. We are currently conducting a baseline review of our performance in relation to the Flexible Framework.

By including sustainability considerations in our tender processes (such as whole life costing, sourcing local suppliers etc.) we are reducing the negative environmental impact of our operations. Close contract management and the use of the NETpostive Supplier Engagement Tool enable us to further improve the sustainability performance of the university and our suppliers, making a positive difference both locally and internationally.

Ethical Investment

We also consider the environmental and social impacts of our direct investments. Our Treasury Management and Ethical Investment Policy makes the commitment that we do not and will not directly invest in fossil fuel companies, arms companies, tobacco companies, alcohol companies and companies complicit in the violation of international law. Further details of our commitment can be found in our Ethical Investment Declaration.
