Named University of the Year 2022 by Times Higher Education, Northumbria is a research-intensive modern university with a global reputation for academic excellence.

Ranked in the UK top 50 (Guardian University League Table 2022 and Complete University Guide 2023), Northumbria recorded the biggest rise of any UK university for research power in the Research Excellence Framework for the second time in 2021 and is now rated within the top 25 in the UK.

We are seeking suitably experienced individuals from all sectors of the community who are interested in becoming Independent Members of our Board of Governors for this outstanding University. We are particularly interested to hear from those within the IT and Digital sector or those with commercial skills and experience, ideally with an international dimension.

As a member of our Board, you will be passionate about the transformative power of education and research, share Northumbria’s Vision and have the motivation, commitment, ambition and capacity to help shape its future. Governors contribute at the highest levels of the University, utilising their professional expertise to support, question, and advise the Vice-Chancellor and University Executive on key strategic matters. You will also have the opportunity to engage with our students and staff and be part of some of the exciting events in our academic calendar.

You will join us as at an exciting time with a new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Long, joining the institution in August 2022 and the development of the next University Strategy under way.  This is an exceptional opportunity to be involved in the governance of the THE University of the Year 2022 and one of the largest Universities in the UK with 37,000 students from 142 countries and over 3,000 staff.

We continue to seek to strengthen the diversity of our Board with members of ethnic minority and traditionally under-represented groups, and are particularly looking for individuals who have demonstrable senior executive and/or non-executive experience in one or both of the following fields in large-scale organisations:

We are looking for skills in IT, data management and security and digital and technological transformation

We would prefer candidates to have, and maintain, a strategic awareness of the current and future developments in the IT and digital sector.  A background in leading large organisations' digital change agenda and an understanding of the emerging technical opportunities open to enterprises would be desirable.  Candidates will understand the implications of utilising advances in technology in higher education and be able to help guide the University in responding to the technical challenges it faces while suggesting opportunities in this field.

The University is currently delivering an ambitious IT strategy, to provide the technology to support the teaching, learning and research ambitions of the University.  There are also significant business change programmes of work, with a high degree of reliance on technology, that requires oversight and external input through previous experience.  As a member of the Board of Governors, you will join the IT Advisory Board to assist in shaping and governing the IT roadmap, IT Strategy and future digital agenda.  You will also provide governor representation through the Employment and Finance Committee which has delegated responsibility from the Board of Governors for the IT Strategy.

We are looking for individuals with expertise in commercialisation, enterprise and income diversification including international working

We would expect candidates to be able to advise the University, including the University Executive Commercial Performance Committee, on how to obtain best value from its large-scale contracts for service provision such as catering, student accommodation and facilities management, as well as how best to drive and diversify commercial income from teaching, research and other activities.

Candidates should also be able to provide guidance on how to extend the reach and effectiveness of the University’s international commercial work, including commercial income as above but also both commercial and educational partnership development.
