Lecture: Diversity in the Legal Profession - Challenging and Overcoming Barriers

District Judge (Magistrates Courts) Tan Ikram, Deputy Lead Diversity and Community Relations Judge

District Judge Tan Ikram was Called to the Bar (I) in 1990 and, then, admitted as a solicitor in 1993. He was a partner in a law firm and specialised in criminal defence and prosecution work.

Tan was appointed a part-time Deputy District Judge (MC) in 2003 and a full-time District Judge in 2009 and is now a specialist judge in extradition and terrorism. In 2015, he was appointed an Associate Judge of Her Majesty's Court on the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus. He will be sworn in as the next Deputy Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate) on the 31st of March.

He has been awarded two honorary degrees, Doctor of Laws (LLD) and is a contributing editor of a leading textbook in criminal law and practice, Archbold Magistrates’ Courts Criminal Practice 2017. He is a visiting professor at the University of West London.
