BLD Foundation First Headstart Programme

The First Headstart programme is targeted at students from ethnic minority backgrounds in their first year (law degree) and second year (non-law) at university based in the UK.

BLD Foundation, is a charity whose aim is to advance education among Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds in the UK (our programmes are national, covering England and Wales). Our ethos is about changing lives and transforming businesses. We do this through our Legal Gateway Scheme that consists of programmes aimed at those in school, college and university interested in pursuing a career in law.

The First Headstart Programme is free to access for students (selection is by online application) and offers a high quality training workshop on commercial awareness and making successful applications; and some networking and work shadowing opportunities. The aim is to equip students with preparatory information for vacation scheme and training contract applications that they will be undertaking in the near future.

The programme is targeted at students from ethnic minority (African, Caribbean, Asian) and/or socially disadvantaged (first generation in the immediate family to attend university / receive(d) education maintenance / school meals) backgrounds in their first year (law degree) and second year (non-law) at university in the UK. The main workshop will take place in London but students in universities across England and Wales can apply, and there will be some contribution towards your travel expenses to London.

The programme consists of a 1-day interactive workshop (which will take place in London on 5 July 2017), with sessions delivered by experienced lawyers and graduate recruitment personnel currently working within the legal industry. It will be like attending an open day with several firms simultaneously. There is also the potential opportunity to visit selected law firms for work shadowing in the summer.

The aim of the First Headstart programme is to:

  • Educate and inform about what the legal profession has to offer and the available wide-ranging opportunities.
  • Provide hints and tips on vacation scheme applications and interviews
  • Provide advice from recent graduates and trainees
  • Provide insight into what students should be doing to prepare themselves for a career in law, including:
  • Practical introduction to commercial awareness
  • An insight to different routes to the legal profession
  • Participation in career development exercises
  • Work shadowing
  • Making the most of networking – professionally approaching lawyers

Companies that will be represented at the training and networking workshop include Barclays, Baker & McKenzie, DAC Beachcroft, the Government Legal Service (GLS), Pinsent Masons, Sidley Austin, the University of Law, and Vodafone.
