The SLS Centenary Lecture: Sir John Laws

Lecture Theatre 003, Ground Floor

The SLS Centenary Lecture: Sir John Laws, “Free Speech, Law and Religion”

Northumbria Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice Studies (NCECJS) and The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) are delighted to host the SLS Centenary Lecture with speaker Sir John Laws.

The SLS Centenary Lectures were initiated in 2008 to mark the centenary of the founding of the Society. The SLS Centenary Lecture is held annually at a different location, hosted by university law schools.

About the Speaker

Sir John Laws served in the Court of Appeal and Privy Council since 1999 and has been responsible for a large number of important cases including Thoburn v Sunderland City Council in which he recognised principles of the common law that collided with the notion of Parliamentary Sovereignty.

Sir John is also a constitutional jurist of note, having written several extra-judicial contributions that underline the importance of the rule of law and the courts in a democracy so that sovereignty is founded in the constitution, not just Parliament.

The Society of Legal Scholars has around 3,000 members, mostly working in law schools in the United Kingdom and Ireland, in addition to its Associate (overseas), Emeritus, and Honorary members.

Date: Wednesday 29 November 2017

Time: 5.30pm - 7.30pm
