Travelling to Newcastle upon Tyne

Whether travelling by road, rail, air or sea, Newcastle upon Tyne is easily accessible.

By Road

The A1(M) passes through Newcastle linking the area to London, the South, Scotland and major routes across the country. The A69 links west to Carlisle, the Lake District and, via the M6, to the South and West of England.  

By Rail

As a major stop on the efficient East Coast Mainline, Newcastle is just 2 hours 45 minutes from central London and 1 hour 30 minutes from Edinburgh and Leeds. Newcastle’s Central Station is located in the heart of the city centre and has its own Metro Station. By Air 

Newcastle International Airport is one of the UK’s fastest growing regional airports and has recently benefited from a £7m extension programme. With airlines including Emirates, British Airways, KLM, Air France, easyJet and Jet2 all flying into Newcastle International Airport. The airport is under 30 minutes from the city centre by Metro or taxi. 

Key cities served directly from Newcastle International Airport include: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Dubai, Dublin, London and Paris. There are many direct flights on offer, with the airport connecting directly to over 70 destinations across the world.  

By Sea

Car ferry and passenger services operate to Tyneside from Holland. The North Shields International Ferry Terminal at Royal Quays ( Tyne Commission Quay) is seven miles east of Newcastle. Bus services run from the terminal building to the city centre. More information can be found here.
