Craft Values in Digital Making: Handthought

July -

University Gallery

This selection of new wooden tableware by digital craftsperson and researcher Justin Marshall, has been developed to explore both the aesthetic opportunities that CNC (computer numerically controlled) technologies hold for the maker, and question where the line between hand and machine made lies - if it exists at all!

Justin is interested in using digital tools/technologies, not for the accurate reproductive capabilities for which they are so often put to work in design contexts, but for their transformative role; emphasizing the intrinsic role that engagement with tools, digital or otherwise, play in the creative act of making.

This exhibition forms part of the Great Exhibition of the North, an 80-day cultural extravaganza. The Great Exhibition tells the story of how the North's innovators, businesses, artists and designers have shaped our present and how they are inspiring our future.

Running from 22 June - 9 September, three million people are expected to take part in Get North activities, making it the UK's biggest event this year, and Northumbria is playing a key role.

Northumbria’s programme of events and activities highlight the University’s excellence in diverse areas, from art, design and innovation, healthy eating and nutrition, computer science and gaming, to the experiences of volunteers in conflicts and emergencies.

Northumbria is proud to be playing a key part in the Great Exhibition of the North and staff and students have been working hard to bring a programme of inspiring events and exhibitions to the official Design Trail.
