Lucas Ferguson-Sharp

Lucas Ferguson-Sharp is an artist and researcher from Montreal, Canada. After graduating from Dawson College in 2011, he spent one year attending the School of Visual Arts in New York before moving to the United Kingdom to study at the Glasgow School of Art’s Enviromental Art. Lucas is now completing a Ph.D. at Northumrbia University researching the techniques and materials of artist Norman Cornish.

About his work

Inspired by Great Exhibition of the North, Lucas has presented two works developed from his research on artist Norman Cornish. Both works revolve around the notion of storytelling as an essential part of creating and maintaining cultural identity. The first piece is a short film made up of interviews Lucas has conducted as part of his research into Cornish’s practice.

During these interviews Lucas used a selection Cornish’s artworks as visual prompts to entice storytelling and to gain an Oral History of each artwork from those who knew Norman or were part of the local art scene. The short film consists of audio from 10 interviews and images of the works that prompted the conversations.

The second work purposes to the viewer that their stories and histories are essential to the understanding and interpretation of Cornish’s artwork. The work consist of a booth and an interactive display where the viewer is prompted to react and share stories stimulated by the artwork of Norman Cornish.
