23 September 2019

With the construction sector generating 11 percent of global GDP, it is a key priority for governments around the world. An ever-increasing global population and densely populated urban areas is putting more demand than ever on the industry, and outputs are estimated to grow another $8trillion by 2030. While this might paint a rosy picture, the industry is still plagued by challenges of low productivity, poor performance, major skills shortages, unsustainable practices and compromised safety. The industry needs to address these challenges head on in order to maximise growth and socioeconomic impact.

Digital technologies will play a key role in addressing these issues, with the likes of cloud computing, Building Information Modelling, Virtual and Augmented Reality, blockchain enabled smart contracts and more. The UK has already taken a strong lead in this area, with a particular concentration of expertise in the North East of England. Effective collaboration between local government, universities and industry has led to a vibrant community driving innovation on an international level.

It is for this reason that the North East Local Enterprise Partnership has commissioned Northumbria University to develop a business case for the International Centre for Connected Construction (IC3) based in Newcastle. The centre is a huge opportunity to build on existing expertise in digital construction and foster national and international collaboration that has a lasting and positive impact on the global economy.

In order to build the business case, Northumbria has been engaging with leaders in construction and digital technologies globally, from Newcastle to China. We will be hosting a workshop for senior decision makers in Europe at Jaz Amsterdam on September 23rd. Please use the form below or button above to register your attendance.
