The Antidote to Black Swans

Calamitous events, alarmingly, have a habit of being unexpected. Financial crashes, natural disasters, infectious diseases, the failure of household names from the High Street – all seem to take us unawares and leave us scrambling to catch up with the pace of collapse. Yet, whilst we cannot see the future, we can prepare for it. John Williams looks at the sudden, unexpected, and sometimes ruinous situations that we call, metaphorically, ‘Black Swans’, and how their impact can be lessened, or even exploited for good.

About the Speaker

John Mark WilliamsJohn Williams is a problem solver and strategist, working with C-Suite executives and business owners to help meet the challenging uncertainty in the future of work, and to grow business performance. He has been CEO of the Agile Business Consortium for just over a year, and brings experience of international trade & investment, and leadership development, across UK, Europe, Middle East, Far East and North America. He is a guest lecturer in strategy and business at numerous universities, and occasionally writes about business for online publications. Outside of work John is a runner, cyclist, and marathon coach. He consistently fails to make any progress at roller-blading. His special areas of interest are disruptive innovation, emergent strategy, punctuated equilibrium and other baffling business things. The majority of John’s career was spent in the North East of England, and he retains a deep emotional attachment to the region.

John is also an alumnus of Northumbria University, graduating with an MBA in Business Studies.
