Responsible Business Seminar: The Commercialisation of the Charity Sector

Northumbria University

The Commercialisation of the Charity Sector

Refreshments will be available from 16:30 and the lecture will take place at 17:00 in lecture theatre 403.

The charity sector has been adapting in the face of sustained challenge to ‘become more business-like’. Matt Wilson will discuss how the changes taking place are affecting the nature and texture of charity work. Drawing on research from his recent William Leech Fellowship he will reflect on the emergence of a ‘cash is king’ mindset, describing the ways that this risks undermining the relational basis that has been characteristic of the sector.

About the speaker:

Matthew Wilson, BA, MA, MSc., Goodlabs UK and Durham University

Matt lives in the Tyneside town of North Shields with his wife and two children. He runs a management consultancy business called Goodlabs that works with charities and businesses to help them to ‘do good better’. He also represents his local community as an elected councillor.

Over the years he has been known for his work pioneering youth projects in disadvantaged urban areas (Eden Network 1997-2013) as well his more recent leadership roles with Safe Families for Children and the education charity TLG.

Matt holds an MA from the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy at King’s College London and an MSc from the Business School at the University of Salford and is an active fellow in the RSA’s Newcastle chapter.
