Tyneside Cinema

Tyneside Cinema is a unique independent cinema, heritage attraction and art gallery in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, and home to a range of programmes that support creative talent and deepen understanding of art and film – and the crossover between the two.

Northumbria University and Tyneside Cinema enjoy a successful partnership which is expressed through a series of collaborations across our organisations that aim to develop and support creative talent in the region.

Northumbria University has a proud history of film and media studies education with many award-winning alumni, and our partnership with Tyneside Cinema enables our staff and students to explore new approaches to teaching and learning, research, and public engagement.

Northumbria students benefit from engagement with Tyneside staff and events in screenings in the cinema spaces, and our staff collaborate to develop a programme of public discussions and events. We also work together to create opportunities that support emerging talent. Our Graduate Artist in Residence programme provides an outstanding opportunity for a graduating artist or recent alumni to develop their practice and exhibit their work in The Gallery, Tyneside Cinema.

Partner profile

Tyneside Cinema is passionate about developing innovative opportunities for young people to make and exhibit their work in a creative, supportive and professional environment. Tyneside Cinema develops and delivers a host of Learning and Participation programmes for schools, colleges and families, and is home to Northern Stars, a professional film production company. Tyneside Cinema also runs The Factory, a moving image arts project for 14–19 year olds; and Show and Tell, a monthly gathering for students and graduates working with the moving image to get together and discuss their work.

The Gallery is Tyneside Cinema’s state-of-the-art exhibition space and cinema screen, celebrating the creative crossover between artists and filmmakers working with moving image. Tyneside Cinema is also leading the Random Acts Network Centre in the North, one of five Centres across England funded by Arts Council in partnership with Channel 4 to identify and develop young creative talent aged 16–24.
