What expertise will you bring to AI?
I hold a BSc and MRes in Psychology from Northumbria University, with a focus on anti-LGBTQ+ prejudice, romantic relationships, and group identity. My research has also examined racial and gender bias in forensic contexts, particularly in rape cases. Alongside my academic work, I have served as a Research Assistant and Demonstrator, contributing to projects in the CIS department and Northumbria Social Computing (NorSC) Research Group. I am driven to leverage my background in social psychology to contribute to the development of AI systems that prioritize inclusivity and accessibility for underrepresented groups.
Research Interests
My primary research interests revolve around LGBTQ+/Queer studies, with a focus on prejudice, discrimination, and understanding the importance of group and social identities. I am particularly interested in the experiences of transgender individuals, exploring ways to reduce prejudice and bias and improve inclusivity for trans and non-binary persons. I am interested in exploring the intersections of identity and social structures to understand how they may influence experiences of marginalization and empowerment, with the goal of creating more supportive environments for transgender people and other underrepresented groups.
Additionally, I have a growing interest in the role that AI may play in influencing law enforcement practices (e.g., predictive policing, surveillance, and bias mitigation). I would like to explore how AI technologies can either challenge or reinforce existing prejudices, while also exploring its capabilities to promote fairness, accountability, and inclusivity within policing and criminal justice.
What made you want to apply for CCAI?
The CCAI CDT presents a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary research allowing me to combine my background in Psychology with the new skills I will gain in Computer Science. I am excited to develop projects that put citizens at the heart of AI development and implantation, particularly those who are underrepresented.
What are your ambitions for AI? How do you plan to change the world?
My ambition for AI is to ensure that it benefits those who are most marginalised in society, rather than reinforcing existing inequalities - inclusivity should be central to the development of AI. By committing to fairness and accessibility, we can use AI as a tool for social progress, to empower and support underrepresented communities.
