Alan Brown Interior Design Ba Northumbria University Newcastle Larger

Practising, passionate Interior Designer, Presenter, Project Manager ……... and Dancer. Al Joined Northumbria University as a part-time Senior Lecturer in 2011.

Al Graduated from the Design For Industry programme at Northumbria University in 1981, then set up his own Interior and Product Design Company. He subsequently sold this Co and others he had established to create Blueprint Ltd.  Blueprint grew into a large, award-winning International Interior and Architectural Design Co, employing and training hundreds of Grads. Al’s current Co (now small and we think beautiful, based at his Farm) is currently working on an Art Gallery, Boarding School, an O2 Project and a Jazz Café Vegan Veggie Rock and Roll Gaff…! (and more, across the UK).  Al now juggles (he does juggle by the way, and does Ballroom – he used to compete!) a busy Design Practice alongside his days teaching at Northumbria each week. Al has Designed, Project Managed and delivered thousands of very different Projects. He has particular expertise in delivering to client brief, sound and light design, acoustics and getting the best and the most out of wee client budgets.

Al’s passions include working with students, helping and seeing them achieving their future aspirations of landing the job/position/being self-employed; presentation, empowering students to talk about and present their work with confidence and using new technology including that which assists and enhances same for those with learning differences.

Programme Input

Al teaches across all 3 years of the Programme. Projects he leads include ‘Live’ projects - students working on real briefs, meeting real clients on site, culminating in students presenting their schemes to their clients (some resulting in employment on graduation!). Fabulous experience!  Al loves to sit with students, bringing in his work, along with his 35yrs of Industry experience, to chat through at all levels. It’s all about learning, laughing and loving the learning experience.  And his contacts within Industry continue to create employment for Grads as well as Design Placement experience for numerous students at Northumbria. Finally!  Al invites guest designers (inc some ex-grads) to visit, showcase and chat about their work and yeah, their journey!! Okay, really finally – Al loves his jobs!

Al’s research interests are freehand sketching and its use within the creative world. Also, presentation and communication skills, including how current and future technology can and will assist/influence and drive what are exciting and powerful skills to have, to acquire, to develop, to explore. As Al presents for a living, this is a critical, exciting and passionate interest. He also researches ‘Designing Global Hospital and Welfare Buildings’ and how we currently waste Billions doing same.
