Prof James Cunningham

James -Cunningham ,-Northumbria -University -webPrior to joining Newcastle Business School, he held academic positions at University College Dublin and National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway). At NUI Galway he held a range of leadership positions including Head of Strategic Management group, Executive MBA Programme Director, Director of the Centre of Innovation and Structural Change and founding Director of the Whitaker Institute.

His research intersects the fields of strategic management, innovation and entrepreneurship. His research focuses on strategy issues with respect to scientists as principal investigators, university technology transfer commercialization, academic, public sector and technology entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial universities and business failure. His has papers published in leading international journals such as Research Policy, Long Range Planning, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Technology Transfer, International Journal of Technology Management, Journal of Intellectual Capital, Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship and the International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. Awards for his research include six best paper conference awards and two case study international competition awards. He has published several book and research monographs on the themes of strategy, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and technology entrepreneurship with leading publishers such as Oxford University Press, Palgrave MacMillian, Springer and World Scientific Publishing. He has been an editor of special issues for Technovation, Journal of Technology Transfer, Journal of International Entrepreneurship, Irish Journal of Management and Small Enterprise Research and previously was editor of the Irish Journal of Management. He is currently associate editor of the Journal of Technology Transfer and a co-editor of a Springer Book Series on Academic Entrepreneurship, Scientists and Scientific Careers.

He has successfully secured research funding and is an experienced principal investigator leading large scale multi partner publicly funded research programmes for funded agencies such Northern Peripheries Programme (EU), the Higher Education Authority, Ireland, Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland and he is regularly invited to participate in external research funding peer review panels for public funding bodies and university research programmes. He is the author of numerous commissioned research reports for organisations such as the Australian Skills Council, the American Chamber of Commerce, Ireland, Galway City and County Councils, Galway Chamber of Commerce and the Creative Edge and has contributed to policy development processes on technology transfer, innovation, entrepreneurship in Ireland. In 2015 he was invited by the Joint  Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation of the Irish Parliament to provide expert evidence on how to grow and develop the Irish creative economy and industries (see

He has delivered keynote talks and presentations nationally and internationally to business, policy and academic audiences, as well as delivering executive master classes on strategy development, innovation and technology entrepreneurship. He also have developed and delivered Positioning Your Research for Impact workshops for post doctoral and early career researchers.  Over the last two decades he has provided strategic consultancy and advice to start-up firms, SMEs, voluntary organisations and public sector organisations.
