Laura Florez Perez

Senior Lecturer

Department: Architecture and Built Environment

Laura -Florez ,-Northumbria -University -webDr. Laura Florez is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at Northumbria University. She received dual BSc. in Civil Engineering and BSc. in Industrial Engineering from Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia, and MSc. and Ph.D. in Construction Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

She was the sole recipient of the best student paper award from the Construction Division of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) in 2014 and was a finalist of the graduate student paper competition from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) in 2013. Prior to obtaining her Ph.D., she worked as a project manager in Pyramid Masonry in Atlanta, GA and as an engineer in Proyectos & Diseños in Colombia.

Her dissertation, “Decision support system for masonry labor planning and allocation considering productivity and social sustainability”, established a scalable method that supports conscious decision-making at large scale for construction workforce. During the Ph.D period, she was a student leader for a Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)-funded project to support conscious multi-objective planning and operations modelling of infrastructure projects.

Dr Florez’s research interests lie broadly in the field of construction engineering and the built environment, but are primarily focused on decision making tools and innovative mathematical modelling applications. This includes optimisation models for decision analysis; site-based analytics for workforce management; productivity trends and process improvement; integration of project information into simulation models; intelligent automation of workers allocation and scheduling; sustainable construction and development; uses and metrics for sustainable materials selection
