He took up this position in 2003 following retirement from his post of Consultant Clinical Psychologist with the Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust but had been associated with Northumbria University for several years before that.

He is actively engaged in research and writing but has no teaching responsibilities.

Nick has a long-standing interest in research on addictive disorders, with an emphasis on the treatment of alcohol problems. He has accumulated over 450 publications, including books, book chapters, articles in scientific journals, reports and other types of publication, mostly in the field of addictions.

Research Themes and Scholarly Interests

Early in his career, Nick pioneered the development and evaluation of brief interventions for alcohol problems given by general medical practitioners and other frontline professionals and more recently was the co-ordinator of a World Health Organisation Collaborative Project concerned with the implementation of screening and brief intervention for alcohol problems in primary health care. He is a past President of the International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol Problems, a group of scientists and practitioners dedicated to the study and practical implementation worldwide of alcohol brief interventions.   Nick also has a longstanding interest in the specialist treatment of alcohol dependence and was the Principal Investigator (Research Co-ordination) for the largest randomised controlled trial of such treatment so far conducted in the UK (the UK Alcohol Treatment Trial: UKATT). With colleagues he was commissioned by the UK Department of Health to produce a Review of the Effectiveness of Treatment for Alcohol Problems published in 2006. He is currently a board member and trustee of the national charity, Alcohol Research UK.
