Mark Jackson is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Critical Theory and Curatorial Practices in the Arts department. 

Mark studied Fine Art at the University of East London and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, and completed his doctorate at University of the Arts London in the Centre for Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) at London College of Communication. He spent six years teaching as an Associate Lecturer on the MA Sound Arts at LCC and a year on the Fine Art staff at Southampton Solent before joining Visual and Material Cultures at Northumbria in 2014. He was appointed the curator of the university’s Gallery North in 2014 and became a Senior Lecturer in 2016. Alongside his teaching and scholarship, Mark is also the curator at IMT Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in London, which he started with gallery director Lindsay Friend in 2005.

Mark’s research is primarily focused on collaborative art making, investigational curating and intermedia practice, especially where relative to the activities of William S. Burroughs. His research activity varies from exhibitions and collaborative performances to radio programmes, talks, audio projects and science fiction stories. These include performances, texts and video work as part of the mythopoetic fiction Plastique Fantastique (with David Burrows, Simon O’Sullivan, Alex Marzeta, Vanessa Page and others), and artistic responses as part of the research group NEUSCHLOSS (with Fiona Crisp, Charles Danby, Allan Hughes, Tom O’Sullivan, Joanne Tatham and others). Recent publications include 'Donnerrollen/Rolling Thunder', a catalogue text for the Henrik Schrat monograph Orangerie bei Nacht, and This is a Game Called 'Hello, Hello, Here is X.X.', a limited-edition vinyl made from a recorded interview between Burroughs and journalist Roger Clarke.  Mark’s doctoral thesis was a study of the tape experiments of William S. Burroughs as a model for curatorial strategy.

He supervises a number of postgraduate research students at the BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art, whose topics include cybernetic mysticism; curatorial approaches, activities and attitudes within the practice of contemporary art; and performing philosophy/philosophising performance.

In Arts, Mark teaches on a range of modules, with particular emphasis on teaching into Fine Art and the forthcoming Art & Design History BA. He runs the Art History and Critical Theory modules for Fine Art BA (Hons), teaching lectures on Marcel Duchamp and John Cage; Art and the Beat Generation; and Art, Marxism and the Zombie Apocalypse, as well as introductions to semiotics, psychoanalysis and surrealism, queer theory and sound art.
