Prof Mark Loon

I am currently a Research Professor in Management and Organisation Studies with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. As a management researcher, I have published in several top journals recognised as world leading/ internationally excellent by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (UK), Academy of Management Learning and Education, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Human Resource Management Journal, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Business Research and Journal of Management Studies. I have published over 50 peer-reviewed research journal articles, books, book chapters, conference proceedings, and scholarly and practitioner reports/ papers. I was a recipient of the Outstanding Paper in the 2017 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence. I was invited to be a member of the British Academy of Management’s (BAM) Peer Review College. Oxford University Press commissioned me to contribute an article on ‘Critical Thinking in Business Research’ published in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia. I was a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's (IOSH) Research Advisory Panel (the panel has been temporarily disbanded because of the effects on Covid19). I am currently an honorary scholar at the University of Liverpool and a Visiting Professor at Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management, Université d'Aix-Marseille. I am a Chartered Scientist, registered with the Science Council.

I also extensive experience as a management practitioner. I was previously a senior manager as the Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at Bath Spa University. Prior, I also held other leadership roles at various levels. In particular, Assistant Dean for Research and Innovation at the faculty level, research centre leadership and programme/ course leadership. I have been nominated a manager of the year for my supportive and developmental approach. I also contribute to management practice in my organisation and more widely. I am highly active in knowledge exchange initiatives. I had a successful 4-year tenure as Chair of the Human Capital Standards Committee with the British Standards Institute (BSI) representing the UK in the International Standards Organisation's (ISO) 'Technical Committee (TC) 260'. I have also served as an expert on panels in developing several standards published by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and the International Standards Organization (ISO). I have been commissioned to produce practitioner reports by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the World Economic Forum. I am a Chartered Manager and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

As a management scholar, I have been an adjunct faculty member in business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), European Foundation for Management Development’s Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and/or Association of MBAs (AMBA) such as ESDES Lyon Business School in France, the Open University in the UK, and the University of Newcastle in Australia (in addition to Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management-IAE and the University of Liverpool). I have strong expertise in learning in a digital environment. I have published textbooks for the CIPD in this area. In recognition of my contribution to management education and scholarship, I have served as a reviewer to Pearson Education, specifically for some digital texts in general management and organisational behaviour. I co-lead BAM’s Management Knowledge and Education committee. My expertise in doctoral studies was recognised as I was invited to be one of the external examiner’s for the doctoral viva of a Chief Executive of a non-departmental public body of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. I am a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK that recognises my strategic leadership in doctoral studies and learning in digital environments.

Prior to academia, I had a successful career as a management consultant for over ten years. I was employed by firms such as Ernst & Young, Cap Gemini and KPMG. I had a private practice in Sydney providing consulting and business analysis services to clients in the financial services and public sectors. My clients from the private sector included Morgan Stanley and QBE Insurance Group. My public sector clients included the Transport for NSW, University of Sydney and the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department of Malaysia. My areas of expertise include strategic and change management, corporate governance, risk management, organisational development and business process reengineering. I have consulted in the following industries; automotive, financial services (banking, insurance and wealth management), government and the public sector, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and telecommunications. I hold two doctorates; a PhD and a DBA from Australia. I also have an MBA with a specialisation in Finance and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the UK, and a BA in Business Administration from the US with a GPA of 3.9/ 4. I am a recipient of the Australian Postgraduate Award, which is a scholarship, founded by the Australian Federal Government, designed to support postgraduate research training, which was awarded to students of "exceptional research potential".
