Kathryn McKelvey

Department: Northumbria School of Design

My role is to support academic staff in their research aspirations, teach undergraduate students in Motion Graphics & Animation Design and Interactive Media Design. Undertake collaborative learning projects and share this data as a resource with the School. Supervise PhD candidates. Raise my personal research profile nationally and internationally.

On graduation I went to work for a Fashion Forecasting agency in New York City, my role being designer/illustrator in the design studio of ‘Here & There’ for two years. I worked freelance for a number of years for Here & There and IM International after returning to England and a number of British forecasting agencies. I brought these skills to the former Newcastle Polytechnic and taught on the undergraduate programmes of Fashion and Fashion Marketing (when it became standalone degree.) I undertook the additional role of Industrial Placement tutor for ten years, liaising with the fashion industry and building contacts to maintain and improve the placement of every student. I became Programme leader for the newly developed Multimedia Design programme, which grew from an interactive Fashion Marketing project in 1995, and maintained that position for ten years.

After restructuring the School of Design in 2005, I took up the post of Reader in the ‘Communication’ academic community.  I work on collaborative learning projects with Interactive Media Design students and build links with industry. I work on the ‘visual communication’ modules in Motion Graphics and Animation Design teaching drawing, illustration, character design, using hand and digital tools.

I won an ’enterprise' award from a university initiative to produce a publication which started my research career. I won research funding for three years running in the recent University ‘Research Informed Teaching ‘ initiative. I have also received a number of APT awards involving assessment in teamwork situations (for collaborative projects) and assessment feedback by MP3.
