Chris Wakeling

Senior Lecturer

Department: Northumbria School of Design

25 years experience as a professional typographer, graphic designer and letterpress printer. Studied at Trent Polytechnic, graduating with a BA(Hon) Information Graphics. For 10 years Christopher worked in London for Conran Design Group, Michael Peters Literature and Addison Worldwide. During this time he was involved in a wide range of typographical design projects, including: the design and development of an worldwide literature system and typographical standards for Alfa Romeo, Milan; visual literature design for the Guyerzeller Bank, Zürich; conference literature for Monotype Typography; design lead for an integrated typography and publishing programme for the Accounting Standards Board.

Other work includes numerous financial, technical and informational literature projects for clients such as: AVE and Gas Natural in Madrid, Smith+Nephew, Kingfisher, Redland, BBC and Rolls Royce etc. As a partner and director of typography at New Leaf Associates (and joint partner with Partnersatz, Basel and Berne), he designed literature systems for SALI in Germany and LippoMatrix in Zürich as well as wide ranging typographical projects with CS Holding and Ciba. He was a consultant typographer to Identica for the implementation of the NatWest Bank literature programme.

Since 1996 he has continued in professional practice under the banner of  Typographic Design Unit working on typographic and book design projects with publishing houses including Thames & Hudson, Phaidon Press, Random House, Royal College of General Practitioners and Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. TDU maintains strong industrial links with leading design practitioners and educators. He maintains a well equipped letterpress workshop for his own personal experimental typographic work using his comprehensive collection of European foundry typefaces. TDU also works on collaborative projects with leading typographers and designers such as Fraser Muggeridge. In 2003, TDU was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for its typographic work at the Manadnock Paper Design and Printing Awards in the United States.
