Prof Yu Xiong

Academic Career:

Professor Yu Xiong is the Chair of Technology and Operations Management in Newcastle Business School of Northumbria University. Before he joined Northumbria University, he was a Senior Lecturer/Associate Director for Enterprise, Engagement and External Relations of Norwich Business School of University of East Anglia and a Lecturer/director of China Management Research Institute in Queen's University Management School, Belfast.  His research focuses on sustainable manufacturing and supply chain strategies, in the international environment. He is a Fellow of University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and a visiting Fellow of Durham University Business School.

Research and Funding:

Professor Yu Xiong has been publishing constantly in international leading/excellence level journals, including European Journal of Operational Research(ABS 4*), International Journal of Production Research(ABS 3*), International Journal of Production Economics(ABS 3*), Journal of Operational Research Society(ABS 3*), etc.  As principal investigator, He is constantly getting funding from national funding bodies, including the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Relations, British Academy, British Council, Innovation UK, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Satellite Application Catapult, Chinese National Nature Science Research Council etc. In addition, he has been lead guest editors to many international excellence journals, including International Journal of Technology Management(ABS 2*), Technovation(ABS 3*) etc. Professor Xiong has won 2018 Chongqing Development Research Award, presented by the Chongqing Government of China. His research about remanufacturing was cited by report of All Party Parliament Sustainable Resources Group. One of his publications was selected by the best business school of German, Manheim Business School, as teaching and assessment material. 


Professional Activities:

Professor Xiong is an active member of many academic networks both in UK and in China. He was the external examiner to PhD students from Cambridge University, Durham University, Nottingham University and so on. Moreover, he is on the Review Panel of UNESCO Chair in the UK as well as a member of UNESCO Expert Network. In the China side, Professor Xiong is a visiting Professor and Director of the Institute of Science and Technology Innovation Policy of Zhejiang University(3rd in China, QS World University Rank: 144,  ARWU Rank: 151-200), and visiting Professor of Chongqing University(28th in Chinese Ranking), and Central South University(15th in Chinese Ranking) in China, he is also a Fellow of the China Science and Innovation Research Centre of Tsinghua University.


Social Activities:

Apart from being a professor and working on researches in the university, he also shoulders many other important roles both in UK and in China. For example, in the UK side, he is the co-Director of North East Innovation Observatory (Led by North East Local Economic Partnership), he was core member of the China UK Innovation Expert Group, responsible to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategies (BEIS) on innovation collaboration with China . Professor Xiong is also frequently invited as a keynote speaker in many national events, organized by Department of BEIS, the UK Parliament, the UK Intellectual Property Office, British Council, China Britain Business Council, China Ministry for Science and Technology etc. Also, He is a Chartered Engineer in UK and an Olympic Torchbearer for London 2012.  In the China side, he is the only national committee member of the prestigious All China Youth Federation who is based in the UK, he is also member of the international Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Chongqing, and the only only UK scholar who received the prestigious May 4th Medal early in 2015 from Chongqing Government in China for recognizing his contribution and impact created between UK and China.

Economic Impact:

Because of Professor Xiong’s expertise in innovation system and global supply chain, he successfully worked with partners and  played significant role to bring in over 22 million GBP inward investment to the UK’s innovation system. In 2016, he led Tsinghua University Science Park(Tus Park) to set up in Newcastle. Subsequently he became the principal academic investigator of the 1 million GBP Tus-forge accelerator project, funded by Innovation UK. In addition to this, he again played instrumental role to create Cocoon Networks Ltd (, the 7000 sq meters innovation space based in central London, which is now known as the largest technology transfer platform between China and the UK. Professor Xiong is a director of Cocoon Networks. In July 2018, Professor Xiong initiated 5 million GBP investment acceleration fund to North East businesses, about 20 companies will benefit from this project.  Professor Xiong also has extensive and profound collaborative relationships with many other big industry players, such as Unilever, Bombardier, SAP, DOW Chemical, National Heath Service etc.
